Personal Training

Print Friendly

I know that there are a lot of personal trainers out there, so I’d like to tell you a little bit about how I became a trainer and what I offer as a trainer.  I myself struggled with my weight and motivation and self esteem all through high school and college.  After I graduated college, I decided enough was enough and took control of my health through exercise and eating healthy.  I lost 30 lbs and discovered that exercise is not just great for your physical health, but it empowers you, makes you a happier person, and can be therapeutic.  It has become a lifestyle for me.  My goal now is to help others discover fitness as lifestyle!

My initial goal is to come up with a workout that keeps you engaged, is right for your goals and your fitness level, and that challenges you.  I work with you to set your goals, decide what workouts you will enjoy and hold you accountable with your eating AND workouts.  I don’t just see you a few times a week then leave you on your own; we put together a plan for your whole week from workouts outside of our sessions, to what meals you are going to try, and provide healthy homework to you after each session.  These homework assignments are small things you can incorporate one at a time.

And as much as I LOVE working one on one with you, my goal is NOT to be your trainer forever; rather it is to teach you the healthy habits that you can use on your own for life!  We not only work together on your fitness goals and healthy eating, but we also work on breaking down the barriers that are getting in the way of your health such as imbalances with relationships, career, family, etc.

All trainers have their areas of expertise, their preferred methods of training, and their own personalities.  I am not your tough love Jillian Michaels type trainer nor am I your lightweight “do what you feel is right” trainer.  I start at your level, help you set realistic goals, and find a workout that works for you, rather than pushing my workouts on you.  I also don’t just tell you what workouts to do, what to eat, and how often to workout; you are involved in the decision-making because my goal is to equip you to take charge of your health going forward. Following is additional information and questions that I have answered for you.

What about nutrition advice?  I feel like I need help with eating healthy.

I’m not a nutritionist so I cannot prescribe meal plans.  I can however, help you make the right choices and help you find what ways of tracking work best for you, where you should set your goals at, and make recommendations on healthy foods.  Most people know what they should be eating and really just need a little bit of help getting there.  I can make recommendations for meal planning, websites with healthy recipes, cookbooks, etc and tips to incorporate into your daily life.  :-)  As a health coach as well, this is something I specialize in – helping you decide what the right way of eating is for you, because good nutrition varies by person!

Where do you train?

I am a trainer at the Western Area YMCA located in Robinson Township.  I also train in my home located in Coraopolis PA and am also available to train clients in their own home (within 10-15 miles).

What times are you available?

As a stay at home mom first and foremost, I am available during times that work well for my toddler.  At the Y, I’m available a good bit of the day thanks to their daycare and most evenings.  At my home or clients’ homes, it depends on the time and the day but please reach out to me and let me know what times work best for you.  We will find a time that works best!

What equipment do you use for training?

This totally depends on the individual client!  I pretty much can guarantee everyone will use dumbbells, an exercise mat and a foam roller.  I also use stability balls, the BOSU trainer, steps, TRX Suspension Trainer, resistance trainer, barbells, battle ropes, heart rate monitors, kettlebells, medicine balls, etc.  There are a lot of options and it will depend on your goals and fitness level.

What are your certifications? Do you have insurance?

I am a certified personal trainer through the American College of Sports and Medicine.  I am also a certified group fitness instructor through the American Fitness & Aerobics Certification.  I’m certified in Insanity, Turbo Kick, PiYo, and also recently got certified in TRX Suspension Training.  I hold current CPR, AED and First Aid certifications as well.

I have insurance through Philadelphia Insurance, which covers me in my home, a client’s home, a gym, outside…anywhere!

What sets you apart from other trainers?

I focus on the individual and do not use a one size fits all approach. I have also struggled with my weight and my health and am able to empathize and work from your level. I can work with new to health & fitness all the way up to those who are already on a journey.

In addition, as a health coach, I am able to offer you insight on lifestyle and nutrition factors as well.  I find that by discussing the lifestyle factors (e.g. career, family, kids, etc) and barriers you may have, that you are able to continue with your healthy lifestyle even when we aren’t training together anymore, which is my goal!

What do you like best about being a trainer?

I love seeing not just the physical transformation within people, but also the mental transformation!  Taking control of your health allows you to feel better about yourself, be a better person for your family and friends, and have a better quality of health.

What questions do clients most commonly ask you?

One of the most common questions I get from my clients is how do I get flat abs?  Especially from women!  We all want that flat, 6-pack look!  The key to flat abs is a number of things, but the main thing is you DIET!  A lot of people swear by doing hard cardio workouts and a million crunches will you get that physique, but if your nutrition is not on target, your abs will never show through.  When focusing on nutrition, focus on eating real whole foods like fruits, vegetables, lean meats, beans, healthy fats, and whole grains.  Avoid processed foods because those have a lot of sodium and preservatives that can impact your digestive system and cause bloating.  In addition, you also want to make sure you are drinking your 64 oz of water to flush out toxins.

Another question I get is how to I cook healthy for my family?  I encourage people to just start cooking!  Cooking is healthier than takeout and eating out at restaurants, and once you get in the habit of cooking, you’ll be able to tweak recipes to make them healthier.  Before you know it, your family won’t even realize they are eating healthy!

What advice do you have for customers looking for a provider like you?

Make sure when hiring a personal trainer or a health coach that you feel a genuine connection to them.  You have to trust them because you will be sharing a lot of personal information with them.

Also, make sure they seem passionate about what they are doing as trainers and coaches!  Their passion will fuel your motivation.

You also want to make sure that they can relate to where you are coming from and work with you where you are.  For example, if they are focused on bodybuilding and you are new to fitness, make sure that they will be able to train you on a beginner level.

Also, get to know their own health & fitness goals and practices! Of course make sure they are also insured and certified to be doing what they are doing!

How did you get into your line of work?

I never had a healthy relationship with working out and eating. When I was a teenager, I battled body image and eating issues, yo yo dieting, and in college gained over 30 lbs. Exercise to me was a punishment for a bad day of eating. I was not happy with myself. After college, I decided to take control of my health and started eating healthier and walking. I started doing different fitness programs to work my way up and improve and lo and behold, I lost the 30 lbs but gained a positive body image and self esteem. I became confident and realized, hey, if I can do this for myself imagine what it would feel like to help others do. And that’s how I got here! I love helping other people take control of their health and seeing the opportunities it can open up for them.

Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest in the fitness field?

I am constantly reading articles, magazines and research in the fitness field.  I take certifications and study courses whenever possible.  Most recently, I signed up to take a TRX certification to learn how to train clients using a suspension system.  I thrive on learning more about the cutting edge of fitness!

What other things should customers think of before seeking out a trainer?

Before hiring a personal trainer, individuals should think not only about what their physical goals are, but also what their internal motivation is. Weight loss as motivation will only get you so far. For example, let’s say your goal is to lose 30 lbs. Great! But what’s behind that goal? Is it to be healthier and stay around longer for your kids? Is it to improve your blood sugar? Is it to improve how you feel about yourself? These are things that many people don’t think through, but those who do, see better success because they stay motivated.

In addition, also think about your greatest challenges such as time, lack of family support, etc and talk to your trainer or health coach about these. Put them out there up front so that you can discuss ways to avoid those issues.

What is your greatest strength?

My greatest strength is my ability to listen to people and empathize with them.  In addition, I’m also EXTREMELY passionate about what I do as a personal trainer and a health coach because I’ve seen for myself what health can do for a person’s life.  I also am hard working and am able to push you to your own limits without screaming in your face and making you cry!
